The Jinghong Dam is a gravity dam made of rolled concrete (RCC) on the upper reaches of the Mekong , which is called Lancang in China, near Jinghong in the Chinese province of Yunnan . The main purpose of the dam is hydroelectric power generation ; a power plant with an output of 1750 megawatts serves this purpose . Part of the electrical energy generated is sold to Thailand.
The construction costs were 2.3 billion yuan (currently the equivalent of about 350 million US dollars). The hydropower plant was commissioned between 2008 and 2010.
