The Xiaowan Dam on the Mekong , which is called Lancang in China, is a large dam in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan and since its completion the second highest dam after the Nurek Dam . It also has the highest dam and also the highest arch dam .

The dam was built to generate electricity, for irrigation and to make the Mekong navigable during the dry season from November to May. The project is the second largest dam project in China after the Three Gorges Dam . The dam is located in a gorge in the administrative area of the prefecture-level city of Lincang, southwest of the Dali der Bai Autonomous District . A large number of people have been relocated. For this reason and for reasons of environmental protection there were many opponents of the project.

The start of construction is given differently with 2001 or 2003, the completion was 2010. The estimated construction costs are 30 billion yuan and 2.7 to 4 billion US dollars.

China's go-west strategy comprises a cascade of eight dams over a distance of 800 km.

The Xiaowan Dam lies above the Manwan Dam and will reduce the amount of mud that is already silting up the Manwan Reservoir. But all eight dams will sooner or later difficulties with the silting get.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete arch dam with a height of 292 m above the foundation level . The top of the wall is at an altitude of 1245 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 902 m.

power plant

The power station of the Xiaowan Dam has an installed capacity of 4,200  MW , the secured capacity is 1,778 MW. The annual production is 18.99 billion kWh . The six machines with a capacity of 700 MW each are located in an underground machine hall with the dimensions (length, width, height) 298 m × 30 m × 79 m. The machine shop is on the right side of the river.

The electricity generated is partly exported to Thailand.
