Jiro Watanabe

Jiro Watanabe ( Jap. 渡辺二郎 , Watanabe Jiro * 16th March 1955 in Yakage , Japan ) is a member of the Yakuza -band Yamaguchi-gumi and former Japanese boxer in the super flyweight .

Professional career

Watanabe began his professional career on March 27, 1979. On April 8, 1982 he boxed against Rafael Pedroza for the world title of the association WBA and won by unanimous decision of the judges. He defended this title six times in a row and resigned it in 1984.

On July 5, 1985, he was WBC World Champion when he defeated Payao Poontarat by split decision. After four consecutive title defenses, he lost the belt in late March 1986 against Gilberto Román by unanimous decision.

Watanabe announced on November 8, 1991 that he would be retiring from his career.

Yakuza

He belongs to the largest yakuza gang, Yamaguchi-gumi, was charged with attempted extortion in 1995, received a long prison term in 1999 for buying and selling an automatic rifle in connection with a murder case, and was charged again with Kenji Haga in 2008 for attempted extortion and was given a two-year term in 2011 Prison sentence.
