Phayao Phoontharat ( Thai พ เยาว์ พูน ธ รัตน์ ; born October 18, 1957 in Bang Saphan County , † August 13, 2006 in Bangkok ) was a Thai boxer .

amateur

At the age of 18 Phoontharat won the bronze medal in the light flyweight (up to 48 kg) at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal . He was able to prevail in the quarterfinals against the Hungarian György Gedó , Olympic champion from 1972, but lost in the semifinals prematurely against the North Korean Li Byong-uk . He became Thailand's first athlete who could win an Olympic medal.

professional

In 1981 he became a professional boxer. On November 27, 1983 he dethroned the Venezuelan Rafael Oronó and became WBC world champion in the light bantamweight division. He lost the belt by losing points on July 5, 1984 in his second title defense to the Japanese Jirō Watanabe , and he lost the rematch on November 29, this time even prematurely. After another defeat, he ended his career in 1985.

politics

After his professional boxing career, he joined the Democratic Party and was elected to the Thai parliament in 2001 as a constituency member of the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan . A year later he fell ill with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis . On August 13, 2006, he died of the disease in Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok .
