João Rodrigues

João Rodrigues (born November 2, 1971 in Funchal , Madeira ) is a Portuguese sailor who competes in windsurfing . With seven participations so far, he is one of the athletes with the most participations in the Olympic Games .

Sporting development and successes

Rodrigues took part in all Summer Olympic Games from 1992 to 2016 and started in the windsurfing class (with different types of boats). His best results were 6th place in 2004 and 7th place in 1996 . At the 2016 Olympic Games , he was his country's flag bearer during the opening ceremony.

He started sailing as a child and competed in his first regattas at the age of eleven. Since 1987 he has been part of the Portuguese national team. His greatest successes were the 1995 world championship and three European championships (1996, 1997 and 2008). He also won one silver and one bronze at world championships, as well as another bronze medal at European championships.

Private

Rodrigues completed an engineering degree.

On the occasion of his 40th birthday in 2011, he managed the longest non-stop trip ever by a windsurfer over 160 nautical miles from Madeira to Selvagem Grande .
