Jo, Jette and Jocko is a Franco-Belgian comic series .

action

Jo and Jette are the children of Jacques and Sylvie Legrand. You accompany your father around the world because of his work as a recognized engineer. With the help of their monkey Jocko, they can stop a mad scientist and prevent acts of sabotage against a supersonic aircraft and the construction of a bridge.

background

Hergé wrote and drew the adventure series as a commissioned work for the French youth magazine Cœurs Vaillants . Due to various content-related requirements, he was never able to identify with the series in the same way as with Tintin . According to an interview between Hergé and Numa Sadoul, Jocko is derived from a toy monkey for which he was doing an advertising contract at the time.

The series appeared from 1936 to 1939 in Cœurs Vaillants and, with a time lag of almost nine months, in Le Petit Vingtième , the youth supplement of the Belgian magazine Le Vingtième Siècle . The first publication was in black and red two-color print, the Belgian version was black and white. The first story, Le rayon du mystère , had 146 pages in its magazine version; the second, Le Stratonef H. 22, 85 pages in Cœurs Vaillants and 87 in Le Petit Vingtième ; the third, Jo et Zette au pays du Maradjah , was canceled in France after 25 pages due to the war and was no longer published in Belgium at the time.

From 1946 to 1954, the comic was printed for the first time in four-color printing in the Belgian and from 1948 to 1955 in the French edition of Tintin . The second story was expanded to 102 pages, the third completed with the participation of Jacques Martin .

For the Casterman album edition from 1951, the first story was shortened to 104 pages, the second extended by another two pages, so that five albums of 52 comic pages each could be published. The German-language albums were published by Carlsen and Schreiber & Leser . A republication took place in the series Hergé Werkausgabe by Carlsen. In 2016, Carlsen started reissuing all albums.

rating

Benoît Peeters evaluates the first story as naive science fiction, which is overshadowed by the simultaneous works The Blue Lotus and The Arumbaya Fetish . The rapid course of events, lots of pretty details and the fact that children play the main role have their own charm , according to him . The second reveals weaknesses in the plot, but these are offset by the narrative. The comparatively lengthy story, told to the end without too many surprises, is nevertheless entertaining. The last one reminds him much more of Tintin because of the exotic locations and the stronger humor . Without a doubt, he considers this volume to be the most successful of the series, since in it the often too good and opinionated nature of the children is canceled out by the childish behavior of the ruler of Gopal.
