Joachim Barth (physician)

Joachim Barth (born July 30, 1942 in Wurzen ) is a German dermatologist and allergist . From 1983 to 1994 he was director of the skin clinic of the Medical Academy "Carl Gustav Carus" and then of the Dresden University Skin Clinic . He was a board member and honorary member of the German Psoriasis Association and has been a member of its Scientific Advisory Board since 1992, eight years of which as its spokesman.

Life

Joachim Barth attended the former Princely School St. Augustin in Grimma from 1956 to 1960 . From 1962 to 1968 he studied human medicine at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, where he received his doctorate in 1968 with the thesis "Investigations into the occurrence, symptoms and etiology of byssinosis in the cotton-processing textile industry".

He received his specialist training at the University Dermatology Clinic in Leipzig. In 1975 he defended his habilitation thesis “Investigations into the prospective recording of photosensitizing properties of pharmaceuticals and industrial substances”. In 1978 he was appointed university lecturer in Leipzig and in 1983 he was appointed to the chair in the specialist field of dermatology and venereology at the "Carl Gustav Carus" Medical Academy in Dresden. At the same time he took over the directorate of the local skin clinic. In 1995 he settled as a dermatologist in Borna and worked as a dermatological consultant for the local clinic and, until 2017, for the municipal clinic St. Georg in Leipzig.

Act

Joachim Barth is the lead author of over 250 scientific publications and author or co-author of 24 monographs or monograph contributions. He has given over 350 scientific lectures and 53 poster presentations and has published numerous popular science publications. His main areas of work were and are photodermatology, psoriasis, external dermatotherapy , tropical dermatology and the history of medicine . In 1991 he was elected chairman of the Saxon AIDS Foundation. 1983 to 1984 he worked as a university professor at the Gondar College of Medical Sciences in Ethiopia. Joachim Barth was President of the 10th and last meeting of the Dermatological Society of the GDR in Dresden, where the reintegration of the GDR dermatologists into the German Dermatological Society was completed. From 2007 to 2013 he was a board member and treasurer of the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA) and organizational director of two psoriasis world congresses. Since 2008 he has been a founding member and board member as well as treasurer of the main network Leipzig / West Saxony.

Awards

In addition to his honorary membership in seven foreign scientific societies, Joachim Barth received the Maxim Zetkin Prize of the Society for Clinical Medicine of the GDR in 1981 and the Karl Linser Prize of the Society for Dermatology of the GDR in 1990. He also received the 1st research award from the Fördervereinigung Sonnenforschung e. V. (in 1994) and has held the honorary chairmanship of the Southeast German Dermatological Society since 2018.
