history

Academy Surgical Clinic (1959)

In 1748 the Collegium medico-chirurgicum was founded in Dresden . The Royal Medical Surgical Academy, which existed from 1815 to 1864, is considered to be the forerunner of the Medical Academy. Among others, Carl Gustav Carus , as professor and co-founder, and Johann Ludwig Choulant , as professor and last rector, worked on it. During the time of National Socialism there were plans from 1938 to set up an independent medical university in Dresden. However, this project failed initially for financial reasons and later as a result of the Second World War .

The Medical Academy Dresden was established in 1954 with the Medical Academy Erfurt and the Medical Academy Magdeburg ; because in the GDR there was a lack of medical training capacities. The structural starting point of the MedAk, as the hospital is still often called today, was the city hospital in Dresden's Johannstadt district, which has existed since 1901 . The academy was named after Carl Gustav Carus when it was founded. The internist Wilhelm Christian Crecelius and the surgeon Albert Fromme , who also became the first rector of the university, played a major role in the founding of the Dresden Academy, which started teaching in the winter semester of 1954/1955 with 71 students and seven professors .

Doctors and dentists were trained at the MAD in the clinical part of their training after passing the first section of the medical examination (Physikum). Due to the "Institute for Dental Offspring" in Dresden since 1923, the training of dentists at the Medical Academy Dresden took place from the beginning, unlike in Magdeburg and Erfurt. Pre-clinical studies were planned for both subjects, but it was not realized until 1990, shortly before the university came to an end. Until then, the pre-clinical training of the Dresden medical students took place at the Humboldt University in Berlin and that of the dental students also took place at the Humboldt University as well as at the universities in Rostock , Jena , Halle and Leipzig . As at all universities in the GDR, there was an institute for Marxism-Leninism at the MAD for the ideological instruction of the students, but also of the academic staff as well as the lecturers and professors. In total, around 6,000 graduates left the Dresden Medical Academy between 1954 and 1993.

In October 1993 the university hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden , which has been a legally independent institution under public law since 1999 , and the medical faculty of the Technical University of Dresden emerged .
