Joachim Escher (born March 24, 1962 in Lörrach ) is a German mathematician and university professor. He is a professor at Leibniz Universität Hannover and has been Vice President for appointment matters, personnel development and academic training there since January 2015.

Life

Joachim Escher grew up in Switzerland and studied mathematics, theoretical physics and astronomy at the University of Zurich . In 1991 he did his doctorate “On quasilinear parabolic problems” with Herbert Amann at the University of Zurich and went to Besançon on a post-doc scholarship . Then he spent two years as an assistant in Basel , where he 1996 on "Free edges in porous media" habilitated ; In 1997 he was offered a position at the University of Kassel .

Since 2012 he has been editor-in-chief of the journal "Nonlinear Analysis: Real World Applications". He is also co-editor of "Nonlinear Analysis: Theory, Methods and Applications", "monthshefte für Mathematik "," Journal for Evolution Equations "," Open Mathematics; Editorial Advisory Board "and" Electronic Journal of Differential Equations ". From 2005 to 2011 he was co-editor of the " SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis " ( SIAM ).

He deals with partial differential equations, especially with mathematical fluid mechanics, geometric evolution equations and free boundary value problems. He works intensively on the mathematical modeling of water waves .

Together with his doctoral supervisor Herbert Amann, Joachim Escher wrote a three-part textbook on analysis.
