Joachim Koch (* 11. February 1949 in front ) is a German visual artist .

life and work

Koch first completed an apprenticeship as a plasterer and painter in 1966. From 1967 to 1972 he studied at the Folkwang School of Design in Essen . He has been a freelance sculptor since 1974. In 1978 he got a job at the steel construction company Noell, Würzburg, through the mediation of the cultural group in the BDI. As early as 1979, Koch was involved in the exhibition Forum Junge Kunst in Mannheim and in 1981 in Junge Westen in Recklinghausen . In 1993/94 he accepted a teaching position at the design department at the Würzburg-Schweinfurt University of Applied Sciences . Koch lives and works in Kleinrinderfeld near Würzburg .

Koch's work is in the tradition of concrete art . His works are characterized by basic geometric shapes that are related to one another with succinct urgency. Quite a few of his works derive their effect from an element of surprise in the construction that only reveals itself at second glance.

"The sober elegance that characterizes Koch's work with its ascetic rigor is consistent throughout."

- Heinrich Ragaller

“Joachim Koch creates sculptures aiming at their coherence, tension and readability. The work is rarely done at the first attempt, mostly detours lead to the goal. By spending time, taking time and perseverance, he comes to a result that doesn't show the effort. It's a swing between feeling and mind. "

- Kunstverein Würzburg e. V .: 2009

"His sculptures are characterized by clear, often geometric shapes, perfect craftsmanship and extreme precision, which" also represent resistance (...) to the everyday wear and tear of material and meaning "."

- City of Würzburg
