Joachim Metzner

Joachim Metzner (* 1943 ) is a philologist . From 1989 to 2012 he was rector / president of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences .

Live and act

In 1979, Joachim Metzner was appointed professor for language and literary education at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, and in 1981 he was the dean of this department. In 1984 the convention elected him Vice Rector for Teaching, Studies and Study Reform and finally in 1989 Rector of the university. From 1991 to 2008 Metzner was chairman of the state rectors' conference of the universities of applied sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia . From 2008 to 2012, Metzner was Vice President of the University Rectors' Conference (HRK) with the department of knowledge transfer and academic training, and then until 2014 Vice President with the department of digitization and information structure.

After his retirement in 2013 he became a member of the University Council of Cologne University of Applied Sciences and a member of the Board of Trustees of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. Joachim Metzner has been chairman of the advisory board of the Center for University Development (CHE) since 2014 and chairman of the supervisory board of the Foundation for University Admissions since 2015 .

Metzner was a member of the board of the German Academic Exchange Service from 1992 to 2004 and, since 2004, deputy chairman of the work and service center for international student applications of the DAAD, the HRK and German universities, and from 2008 to 2014 a member of the steering committee of Gate Germany, the Network for university marketing of the DAAD and the HRK and the member universities. Metzner has been a member of the DAAD Board of Trustees since 2012, and a member of the steering committee of the University Forum Digitization since 2014 .

Honors

In 1998 Professor Metzner was appointed honorary professor at the Volgograd State University of Architecture and Construction. The International Faculty of Economics and Law of the Technical University in Nizhny Novgorod awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1999 (Dr. h. C.). In 1999, Metzner was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland for his extraordinary services in promoting German-Polish academic relations . In 2004 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his decades of commitment to university politics and his outstanding services to research and teaching at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences as well as to the development of the North Rhine-Westphalian universities of applied sciences . In 2015, the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class, was awarded for his voluntary work. In 2005 the Technical University of Warsaw and in 2007 the Azerbaijani Technical University of Baku awarded him the title of Dr. H. c.
