Joachim Tauber

Joachim Tauber (born July 28, 1958 in Nuremberg ) is a German historian and director of the Nordost-Institut - Institute for Culture and History of Germans in Northeastern Europe (IKGN).

Life

Tauber studied German , classical philology and history at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and was there in 1989 with a thesis on the subject of the Roman Republic and Russian autocracy in crisis. A comparison of some basic featuresPhD. 1989/1990 Tauber was a research assistant at the chair for Eastern European history and contemporary history at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Karl-Heinz Ruffmann). From 1990 to 2001 he worked as a research assistant at the Institut Nordostdeutsches Kulturwerk e. V., where he was head of the Northeast German Archives from 1993 to 2001 and deputy director from March to December 2001. From 2002 Tauber was a research assistant at the IKGN. Since May 2010 he has been its director.

In 2013, Tauber received his habilitation at the University of Hamburg with a thesis on “The Jewish work in Lithuania 1941-1944” (published under the title: “Work as Hope Jewish Ghettos in Lithuania 1941-1944”, Munich 2015). In the same year he was appointed private lecturer for modern history by the University of Hamburg. Since May 2017 professor at the University of Hamburg (§ 17 Hamburg University Act).

Tauber's academic work focuses on the history of Lithuania in the 20th century, German-Lithuanian relations in the 20th century , German occupation policy in Eastern Europe during the First and Second World Wars, and the Holocaust in the Baltic States.
