Joan de Stuteville

Joan de Stuteville († 1276 ) was an English noblewoman.

Joan de Stuteville was a daughter of Nicholas (II) de Stuteville († 1233) and Devorguilla of Galloway . After the death of her father, she became the sole heir to the estates of the Stuteville family , who owned extensive estates, especially in Yorkshire . Before May 29, 1229 she married Hugh Wake , a son of Baldwin Wake and Isabel de Briwere , her first marriage . She had several children with him, including:

  • Sir Nicholas Wake
  • Sir Hugh Wake († 1315)
  • Baldwin Wake (around 1238-1282)

Her husband died around 1241 during the barons' crusade in the Holy Land . After his death, before February 5, 1244, Joan was second married to Sir Hugh Bigod , a younger son of Hugh Bigod, 3rd Earl of Norfolk, and Matilda Marshal . Her husband was justiciar of England from 1258 to 1260 . She had at least two children with him:

The estate of the Stuteville family inherited the children from their first marriage, their son Roger from their second marriage inherited the title of Earl of Norfolk in 1270 and became 5th Earl of Norfolk.
