Hugh Bigod, 3rd Earl of Norfolk
Hugh Bigod, 3rd Earl of Norfolk († February 11, 1225 ), was an English magnate . Like his father, he was a member of the aristocratic opposition that forced King John Ohneland to recognize the Magna Carta .
origin
Hugh Bigod came from the Anglo-Norman aristocratic Bigod family . He was the eldest son of Roger Bigod, 2nd Earl of Norfolk, and his wife Ida.
Life
In 1206 or 1207 he married Matilda, daughter of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke . Like his father, he joined the aristocratic opposition to King John Ohneland in Stamford in the spring of 1215 , which finally forced the king to recognize the Magna Carta in June. Like his father, Bigod was elected one of the 25 barons who were to oversee the king's compliance with the Magna Carta. When the king, with the support of Pope Innocent III. Revoked his recognition of the Magna Carta, Hugh Bigod and his father were among the leaders of the rebellion in East Anglia during the ensuing war of the barons against the king . For this he was excommunicated as a rebel by the Pope in December . In March 1216 King Johann was able to conquer Framlingham Castle , the headquarters of the Bigods. He pardoned the captured bigods and expropriated those who continued the rebellion. Nevertheless, Hugh Bigod and his father continued to fight on the side of the rebels, even when King John died in October 1216 and his underage son Heinrich became the new king. Only after the Peace of Lambeth in September 1217 did they submit to the Regency Council, which led the government for the underage king. His father received his lands and titles back by April 1218, after which the 70-year-old Roger Bigod increasingly withdrew and probably died in the summer of 1221. Hugh now inherited an extensive, well-established inheritance with lands in East Anglia and other parts of England, who died but already less than four years after his father. His widow married William de Warenne, 5th Earl of Surrey , in 1225 .
