Bigod (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bigod was a family of Anglo- Norman nobility who came to England with the Norman Conquest . Her progenitor is probably Robert le Bigot, who did not come from the high Norman nobility, but nevertheless played an essential role at the court of Duke Wilhelm II of Normandy , who later conquered England. Robert and his presumed son Roger took part in the Battle of Hastings and - like so many other Norman nobles - were then rewarded with extensive estates, especially in East Anglia . The Domesday Book lists 6 lordships in Essex , 117 in Suffolk and 187 in Norfolk for Roger .

Roger is sometimes referred to as the Earl of Norfolk , but it is uncertain whether he ever received that title. The first family member to safely use this title, what his son Hugh Bigod († 1177). He was kept in the family until the 5th Earl, Roger Bigod , who gave the county back to the king in 1302, although he had a brother and two nephews.
