Joaquim Xavier de Morais Sarmento

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Portuguese lieutenant colonel ( tenente-coronel ) Joaquim Xavier de Morais Sarmento was governor of Portuguese Timor from 1790 to 1794 .

His predecessor Feliciano António Nogueira Lisboa (1788 to 1790) almost caused an uprising in the entire east of Timor in a dispute with the monk Francisco Luis da Cunha , which is why Lisboa was recalled prematurely. Sarmento managed to bring the situation back under control.

During Sarmento's term of office, the Topasse ruler Pedro da Hornay made an unsuccessful attempt to conquer the empire Maubara, which sympathized with the Netherlands , on behalf of Portugal . After the failure of the attack, the empire west of Dili only turned more towards the Netherlands and symbolically set their flag .
