João Baptista Verquaim
João Baptista Verquaim was a Portuguese colonial administrator.
In 1794, Verquaim took over the post of governor of Portuguese Timor from Joaquim Xavier de Morais Sarmento . On September 22, 1796, Verquaim began building the first stone fortress in the colonial capital of Dili . At this time, the kingdoms of Maubara and Sonba'i, allied with the Netherlands , were at war with various vassals of Portugal. Without fortifications, Dili was vulnerable to attacks by the neighboring Dutch and other colonial powers such as France and Great Britain . In 1800, Verquaim was replaced as governor by José Joaquim de Sousa .
