Joar Nango

Joar Nango (* 1979 in Alta ) is a Sami Norwegian conceptual artist , installation artist , musician , filmmaker and architect . He created an ethno-sociological installation for documenta 14 .

Joar Nango belongs to a reindeer herder tribe in Sápmi , for whom life is marked by the need to improvise. Joar Nango works on the movement of migrants and indigenous nomads , whose lives are characterized by changing places of residence and barter . For Nango, crossing national borders leads to belonging to a future society. Joar Nango gives indigenous cultures an anthroposophical expression. In 2015 he made a film about making Mongolian yurts and showed it in his Mongolian cinema building in London. Based on Claude Lévi-Strauss' theory of structuralism , he looks for comparable bricolages among indigenous peoples .

Nango lives and works in Tromsø .

documenta 14 contributions in Athens and Kassel

Joar Nango created the installation European Everything (2017) for documenta 14 2017 in the garden of the Athens Conservatory . The post-apocalyptic nomad camp, made of neon, metal, wood, fur, sound installation, food, cooking facilities and a performance invited to reflect and exchange. The Sami musician Joar Nango raps during the performance of demons and the evil, dark sides of people. Raw meat was prepared next to the mixer. The installation European Everything (2017) was also shown at the Kassel location in a glass pavilion on Kurt-Schumacher-Straße . In addition, the documentation of European Everything (2017) consisting of a 1996 Mercedes Sprinter, a video production, color and sound was shown at the Glass Pavilion in Kassel.
