Jocelin from Furness

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jocelin von Furness ( bl. 1175-1214) was an English Cistercian hagiographer who is known for his biographies of Saints Waltheof von Melrose , Patrick of Ireland , Kentigern and Helena .

Life

Jocelin was a monk at Furness Abbey (now Barrow-in-Furness , Cumbria ). He translated or adapted Celtic hagiographic material for Anglo-Norman readers. He wrote the book Life of St. Kentigern or Mungo , ( Vita S. Kentgerni ) for Jocelin , Bishop of Glasgow , and for John de Courcy and Tommaltach, Bishop of Armagh , the book Life and Acts of St. Patrick ( Vita S. Patricii ). His Life of St. Waldeve, Second abbot of Melrose ( Vita S. Waldevi ) was written to promote the cult of a former abbot of Melrose († 1159). His Life of St. Helen ( Vita S. Helenae ) was probably commissioned by a nunnery in England. In addition, the "Book of British bishops" is attributed to him.

It is also claimed that he was also the architect and abbot of Rushen Abbey , but this is only one hypothesis among several.
