Joe Appleton

Joe Appleton (* 1900 in Jamaica ; † after 1956 ) was a British jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet ) of West Indian origin.

Live and act

Appleton was trained in the orchestra of the West Indies Regiment , which he left in Cuba. He led his own bands with which he performed in England and on the continent in the 1920s. In 1931/32 he headed the Hot Maniacs . After appearances with George Clapham and Oscar Dawkings, he was a member of Leslie Thompson's Emperors of Jazz in 1934 and then worked for Ken Johnson . In 1937 he again led his own band, with which he performed in the London clubs Shim Sham Club and Rainbow Roof Club . Then he worked at Fela Sowande , Rudolph Dunbar's Harlem Knights , Cyril Blake and Jiver Hutchinson . In 1948 he was on a European tour with Rex Stewart , recording recordings for Amiga in Berlin . In the next few years he was active across Europe with his own band; with Bertie King he toured Southeast Asia and New Zealand. After 1956 his traces are lost.
