Joe Bertram

Joe Bertram (born April 29, 1957 in Boulder , Colorado , † May 24, 2020 ) was an American politician .

Career

Born in Colorado in 1957, Joe Bertram was a member of the Hawaii House of Representatives for the 11th constituency from January 2007 to January 2011 . He was a member of the Education Committee and the Health Committee, among others. In 2010 he ran for re-election, but lost just short of the Republican candidate George R. Fontaine . Bertram was a member of the Green Party from 1995 to 2000 . From 2002 he was a member of the Democratic Party .

After three unsuccessful attempts to be elected to Maui County Council, Bertram first ran for a seat in the House in 2006. He prevailed with a good 1000 votes ahead (corresponding to about 10% of the vote) against his Republican opponent and received the seat of his predecessor Chris Halford from the Republicans, who had left office for reasons of age.

Private life

Bertram was born on the mainland and moved to Kīhei with his parents when he was nine . He attended Kihei Elementary School, Seabury Hall in Makawao, and Henry Perrine Baldwin High School in Wailuku .

Bertram was HIV positive. He was one of two openly gay members of the state House of Representatives and lived with his partner for more than 30 years.
