Joe Nickell (2010)

Joe Nickell (born December 1, 1944 ) is an art historian best known for his study of paranormal phenomena .

life and work

Nickell graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor's, master's and PhD in art history. He trained as a magician (three years at the Houdini Magical Hall of Fame) and worked as a private detective for a well-known agency. He taught technical writing at the University of Kentucky for several years before joining the CSICOP full time in 1995 .

He works as a scientific advisor on historical issues. Nickell is a member of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (CSI, formerly CSICOP) and a columnist for the US science magazine Skeptical Inquirer . He also appeared on The New Yorker and appeared on the Today show (NBC). He exposed the alleged Jack the Ripper diary as a forgery.

In 2002 he was one of several experts commissioned by the literary scholar Henry Louis Gates to investigate the authenticity of the handwriting of Hannah Crafts " The Bondwoman's Narrative " (1853-1860) as possibly the first novel by an African-American woman in the USA.

In his spare time, Nickell works as a poet. He started writing poetry while in college, but decided not to pursue this hobby professionally.
