Joel Cracraft

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joel L. Cracraft (* 1943 ) is an American ornithologist and paleontologist . He is the curator of ornithology at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH).

Cracraft received his PhD from Columbia University in 1969 ( Functional Morphology of Locomotion in Birds ). In addition to his work at the AMNH, he also taught at Columbia University.

He deals with the higher systematics of birds. Recently he has been investigating (also with DNA analysis) the relationships between the birds of paradise in New Guinea and the surrounding area and the causes of their diversification, as well as the corvids and other songbirds. Another focus of his research is conservation of species.

In the 1970s and 1980s he made (controversial) attempts at a cladistic systematics of birds. He also dealt with paleo-biogeography, patterns in family trees, the concept of species, speciation and other questions of evolutionary theory, collaborating with Niles Eldredge .

He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Ornithologists' Union . He was president of the Society of Systematic Biologists.
