Johan I. van Arkel

Johan I. van Arkel (* around 990 ; † 1034 ) from the first house of van Arkel was the feudal lord of the Land of Arkel , of Heukelom and Polsbroek .

Life

Johan I. van Arkel was the son of Mr. Foppe van Arkel and Maria van Oyen. Johan married Elisabeth van Cuyk (approx. 1010 – approx. 1030), daughter of Willem van Cuyk. Johan had the church of Leerbroek built around 1020 . He went to the Holy Land as a pilgrim , then entered Byzantine services and fought in the campaigns against the Seljuks and the Mirdasids in Aleppo . Johan was killed in an ambush in Syria in 1034.
