Johan de Brune

Johan de Brune the Elder (born May 29, 1588 in Middelburg ; † November 7, 1658 there ) was a Dutch statesman and writer. He was the uncle of Jan de Brune the Younger, who was also called Johan.

Life

De Brune studied in Leiden from 1606 to 1609 , but lived in Middelburg all his life. He was a lawyer and held various political offices in Middelburg; 1649-1657 he was Pensionary of Zeeland .

His pietistic Calvinism was typical of the 17th century. As a follower of the Nadere Reformatie , he shows not only theological interests in his work, but also strong social and political concern. He experimented with the style of prose (he was one of the first and best followers of Montaigne in the Netherlands) and had a penchant for proverbs.

The former is expressed in his most famous work, the Emblemata, which was published in Amsterdam in 1624, but has a very Zeeland influence. The extensive work contains 51 illustrations (based on designs by Adriaen van de Venne ) with poems, each followed by an essay in which he criticizes the mistakes of his time.

His predilection for proverbs is particularly evident in his works Nieuwe wijn in oude le'er-zacken (1636) and Bancket-werck van goede gedachten (1657), in which he provides a number of proverbs with brief comments. Without choosing a fixed form, he teaches the reader to behave ethically in certain situations.
