Johann Abraham Schlieper

Johann Abraham Schlieper (* 1710 in Elberfeld (today part of Wuppertal ); † December 3, 1774 ibid) was mayor of Elberfeld.

Schlieper was born the son of Elberfeld merchant Johann Rütger Schlieper (1681–1728) and his wife Maria Gertrud von den Westen (1685–1770) and was baptized on March 21st. He himself married on June 8, 1730 in Elberfeld Anna von Carnap (1712–1786), the daughter of the mayor of 1707 Johann Kaspar von Karnap (1669–1714). He and his wife had ten children.

Like his father, Schlieper started out as a businessman and became a council member for the first time in 1736. In 1742 he was a common man and after he ran for the first unsuccessful candidate for the office of mayor in 1745, he was elected in 1752. The following year he was a city judge. He became a councilor in 1762 after running again for mayor.
