Johann Adam Kesel (born December 29, 1700 in Kempten ; † August 17, 1776 there ) was a German merchant and mayor of the imperial city of Kempten. He belonged to the Kempten patrician family Kesel .

Life

Johann Adam Kesel was the son of Christianus Kesel (1680–1746) and Catharina Scheffer (1670–1754). He was one of four siblings.

It is documented that Johann Adam Kesel was a councilor and merchant in Kempten in 1760. As a trader in fabrics, furs and tobacco products, he maintained trade contacts throughout Europe and was also represented at the Leipzig trade fair . In his time, Kesel was one of the richest citizens of Kempten, which can be seen in the amount of his tax payments: In 1764 he paid taxes of 1,385 gulden; Landlords in Kempten paid a maximum of 60 guilders during this time. This is why it was nicknamed "Gulden-Kesel". He owned the Wagenseil property in Freudental.

Johann Adam Kesel was mayor of the imperial city of Kempten from 1764 to 1773. At the age of 64 he was elected mayor for life ("consul rei publicae Campidonensis").

On February 16, 1726, he married Elisabeth Rauner from Augsburg, born in 1705 . She died in 1761 and was buried on December 24th. Kesel's second wife, whom he married on August 29, 1762, was Anna Margareta Hauin, born in 1727 (daughter of Hieronymus Hau ) from Kempten, who died in 1798 and was buried on February 6.

Johann Adam Kesel died on August 17, 1776 at the age of 75. He was buried in the Evangelical Cemetery in Kempten below the Burghalde .

Johann Adam Kesel established two foundations in Kempten: in 1772 he set up a scholarship foundation , followed in April 1776 by a family affidavit of 50,000 guilders, from the proceeds of which all of his male descendants living in Kempten were supported. The foundations were dissolved around 1950.
