Johann Andreas Boden (born March 14, 1703 in Stolpen , † April 5, 1764 in Schlieben ) was a German historian and Lutheran theologian.

Life

Johann Andreas Boden was the son of the citizen and butcher Christian Boden, who later went to Dresden . He first attended the school in his hometown and then the school in Bautzen . On April 23, 1723 he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg , where he studied theology, philosophy, Greek, Latin and Oriental philology, poetry and the necessary antiquities. Among other things, he heard from Gottlieb Wernsdorf the elder , enjoyed his trust and was therefore initially able to take over the training of his sons.

On October 17, 1726 he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree at the philosophical faculty and was accepted into the same on April 4, 1739 as an adjunct . In 1730 he became rector of the grammar school in Wittenberg, where he made great contributions. At the Wittenberg grammar school he taught Latin, Greek, history, geography and mathematics and reintroduced Greek style exercises here. As a grammar school director from 1739 to 1744, he held at the same time at the university for future teachers Collegia privatissima on oriental languages, explained Greek and Latin authors along with the antiquities occurring therein.

Based on this experience, when he applied in 1738, he was able to declare that the professorship in antiquities was particularly suitable for a rector of the local grammar school because he still had some time at academic colleges when he was doing his school work. Boden probably saw this as a suitable introduction to an academic career. In 1739 the king gave him the “Professio Antiquitatum Extraordinaria”, which had been vacant for a long time, with the express reservation that this professorship should be withdrawn as soon as he was satisfied.

In 1739 he was appointed professor of antiquity at the philosophical faculty and in 1744 he went to Schlieben as provost, where he was responsible for the administration of churches and schools. On October 3, 1744, he was elected superintendent and on November 1, 1744, he was appointed to the office.
