Johann Baptist Eberenz (born June 11, 1723 in Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl , † February 8, 1788 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German mathematician and engineer .

Life

In 1747 he began teaching at the cadet school in Strasbourg. In 1755 he was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau . He also wrote textbooks on pure and applied mathematics. At the same time, Eberenz was also practically active as the imperial hydraulic engineering director and Rhine island inspector and was thus able to gain important knowledge about river hydraulics, which he passed on to posterity in a publication.

Eberenz also dealt with the Hebrew language and went public with your corresponding book in 1759 (“Regulae praecipuae methodi hagiographicae in usum Philebraeorum”).

Eberenz summarized his knowledge of river hydraulics and river engineering in the work "First reasons for hydraulic engineering on raging rivers" published in 1767. This makes him one of the first in the German-speaking world to scientifically treat the runoff in a natural channel. For example, the investigations of Johann Esaias Silberschlag build on his work .
