Christian Koken

Johann Christian Koken (born October 26, 1779 in Alfeld , † June 15, 1857 in Holzminden ) was a German high school teacher and school director in Holzminden (1812-1854).

Life

Koken was born in Alfeld in 1779 as the son of Syndikus Koken. After the early death of his father, he moved to Hildesheim to live with his grandfather, a court judge. There he attended the Andreanum and then went to study theology and philology at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , where he was a student of Christian Gottlob Heyne . After graduating, he went to Holzminden in 1801, where he found a job as a collaborator at the local high school . 1806 was appointed inspector of the scholarship holders and on October 18, 1812 director of the grammar school. In 1825 he was awarded the title of professor . On his 50th anniversary in office he became a school board member and the philosophy faculty of the University of Göttingen awarded him an honorary doctorate . After 42 years as headmaster, he retired in 1854 and died a few years later.
