Johann Christian Oeder (* 1774 in Oberampfrach ; † March 31, 1837 in Aachen ) was a German businessman and mayor of the city of Aachen and president of the Aachen Chamber of Commerce .

Live and act

Oeder is related to the Franconian theologian family Oeder and was the son of Johann Lorenz Oeder († 1780), pastor at St. Georg in Oberampfrach since 1763 , and his wife Catharina Casselmann. After the turn of the century, Johann Christian Oeder moved to Aachen, where he settled down as a wool merchant and also ran banking. Oeder became a member and head of the Lutheran congregation of Aachen and joined the Aachener Casino Club, which had been founded a year earlier, as the 50th member in 1806 .

After Aachen became Prussian in 1815, Oeder was elected to the city council in 1816 and appointed mayor there from 1826 to 1830. In this capacity he was responsible for the registry office and for the Aachen Chamber of Commerce, whose presidency he took over from 1835 to 1836. In addition, Oeder, as a partner in the "Abgunst mine" in Kohlscheid, was one of the founding members of the Association for Hard Coal Construction in the Wurmrevier and was the responsible treasurer on the elected supervisory board.

Oeder was married to Maria Christine Schlosser from Monschau († 1834), with whom he had two sons and a daughter. The eldest son, Julius Oeder (1810–1861) inherited his father's business "Oeder & Comp, wool business and dyes" and expanded it into a regional life insurance bank. His son Georg Oeder turned to art and became a well-known landscape painter.
