Johann Christoph Gottwald (also Johannes Christoph Gottwald , * July 24, 1670 in Danzig ; † August 1, 1713 ibid) was a German naturalist and doctor in Danzig.

Life

Johann Christoph Gottwald was the son of the Danzig city physician Christoph Gottwald . He studied medicine with Johann Daniel Major at the University of Kiel until August 1693 , then at the University of Leipzig and from August 1694 with Johann Ernst Schaper at the University of Rostock . On April 18, 1695 he received his doctorate in Rostock . In 1697 he settled in Danzig as a general practitioner.

Johann Christoph Gottwald steadily expanded the rich and well-known natural history cabinet that his father had set up . After Peter I's death, the collection was bought from his heirs for 1,000 rubles after a personal inspection of the collection in Gdansk and brought to Saint Petersburg . The remaining copper plates and manuscripts were acquired from the Nuremberg publisher Gabriel Nicolaus Raspe (1712–1785) and published.
