Johann Christoph Heckel

Johann Christoph Heckel (born September 22, 1747 in Augsburg ; † December 6 or 7, 1798 ) was a German Lutheran theologian and hymn poet .

life and work

Heckel studied at the universities of Jena and Altdorf . He then worked in the church and school sector in his hometown. From 1780 he worked as a preacher at the local St. Jacob Church, after which he acted as pastor of the Hospital of the Holy Spirit . He died on December 6th or 7th, 1798 at the age of 51.

His work, published anonymously in Leipzig in 1778, initially contains the double title theological encyclopedia , while the Bible and hymn book for children can be regarded as the forerunners of the school Bible . He also published a kind of weekly newspaper that published hymns. In this way he distributed 40 of his own songs as well as 600 foreign ones, many of which he adapted a little. He added his own songs to other works, but these songs were forgotten by the middle of the 19th century.
