Johann Effert (born June 4, 1863 in Breitscheid , † 1939 in Essen ) was a German Christian trade unionist and member of the Center Party .

Life

After attending primary school, he became a miner in ore mining. He later emigrated to the coal mining of the Ruhr area. He joined the Christian Miners' Association in 1897 . Soon he became a local leader for Osterfeld . Because of his union activities, he and other shop stewards were dismissed by the mine management. The dispute over the dismissal of Effert and his refusal to forego trade union activity led the previously more economically peaceful Christian miners' association to accept the strike as a last resort. The conflict made Effert known in the Ruhr area. Effert was a good speaker and successfully promoted his organization. This recognized his talents and hired him as a full-time agitator. He also devoted himself to legal protection. After a brief return to the mining industry, he finally became a full-time trade union official in 1902. In the miners' strike of 1905 Effert was the chairman of the strike leadership ("Siebenerkommission"). The strike, in which over 200,000 miners took part, had to be broken off due to lack of money. However, the Prussian government had made various promises to meet the miners. In order to put further pressure on the government, a miners delegate day for Prussia was held in Berlin . Effert lectured on workers' committees. At the second delegates' day in Essen in 1906, Effert spoke about the question of wages. Since 1906, the focus of his activity has been outside the Ruhr area. Shortly before the beginning of the war, he became district manager responsible for the organization in the ore area on the right bank of the Rhine ( Siegerland , Westerwald , Sauerland ). He held this position until 1925. In many ways he was also active as an author of articles in the union press. During the Weimar Republic he was a member of the Provisional Reich Economic Council . From 1924 to 1932 he was a member of the Prussian state parliament for the Center Party . He was also a member of the Rhenish provincial parliament .
