Johann Georg Bechtold (born July 24, 1732 in Darmstadt ; † October 15, 1805 in Gießen ) was a German philosopher , literary scholar , rhetorician and Lutheran theologian .

Life

The son of a provisions commissioner attended the education department in his hometown and studied from 1748 to 1756 at the University of Giessen and Jena . On July 12, 1755 he was awarded a major in Giessen. On October 19, 1757 he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophical sciences and in 1759 he became an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Giessen. After he became Ephorus of the princely scholarship holder in 1760, he became castle preacher in Gießen on April 16, 1761, took over the full professorship of philosophy in 1662 and immediately afterwards the professorship of rhetoric and poetry. On August 19, 1765 he received his doctorate in theology.

At the end of 1765 he became a full fourth professor of theology, rose the following year to consistorial assessor, and in 1768 became third professor and associated superintendent of the Alsfeld diocese. After he had become third professor and associated superintendent of the Marburg diocese in 1771, he was appointed first superintendent of Giessen in 1786, preacher at the Giessen town church and first professor of theology. For his services to the school system, he was appointed church and school council in 1803.

Bechtold was an enlightened theologian who was Lutheran Orthodox in his literary publications , while he was open to the Age of Enlightenment . The controversial theologian at the time had, among other things, carried out the appointment of Karl Friedrich Bahrdt to Gießen, where he used his not insignificant influence on the Darmstadt government. Bechtold has also appeared as a hymn poet and composer of sacred songs. Recognizing the growing importance of the German language, he founded a "Teutsche Gesellschaft" in 1763.
