The Zellsee is an artificial lake in the area of the municipality Wessobrunn in the district of Weilheim-Schongau in Upper Bavaria , Germany . The eutrophic lake lies at an altitude of 587 m above sea level, is about 100 hectares in size and is used for fish farming. The lake therefore does not form a uniform body of water, but is currently divided into around forty fish ponds, the two largest of which have an area of 25 and 29 hectares. It was created when the Wessobrunn abbot Ulrich von Höhenkirchen had the Rott dammed with a dam in 1414 to ensure a better fish supply for his monastery. It was partially drained again in 1843 to obtain litter meadows and thus shrank to an area of around 85 hectares. The Rott, which is still called Rottgraben up to the northern end of the lake, flows through the lake. The lake is privately owned by the von Papen family and is not a swimming lake. Since 2006 the lake and its surrounding area have formed a 161 hectare European bird sanctuary ( FFH and SPA area), which offers breeding, feeding and resting habitats for rare bird species such as the black kite , the marsh harrier and the osprey . The two hamlets of Zellsee and Weghaus are on the north bank, near the southwestern bank of the hamlet of Moosmühle.
