The Luisencenter is a shopping center in Darmstadt in the south of Hesse . The name indicates the location of the center on Luisenplatz .

location

The shopping center is located in the center of Darmstadt, opposite the regional council , next to the city's new town hall.

Construction and architecture

The Luisencenter was built between 1975 and 1977 under the direction of the architect Theodor Josef Seifert on behalf of the investor Jakob Wilhelm Mengler . It was originally designed to be multifunctional as a shopping and congress center as well as a new town hall and, in addition to shops and restaurants, also contained public facilities as a multi-purpose area with a congress hall and office space. In the course of the construction work, the Wilhelminenstrasse tunnel was created , part of a one-way ring around the city center, which also serves to develop the Luisencenter and its underground car park . The Luisenplatz was partially tunneled under.

After the city of Darmstadt had sold its stake in the building for 32.3 million euros, the building was extensively renovated and made more visually appealing in 2002/2003. Today's pure shopping center has a sales area of 16,000 m², which extends over three levels. The center is directly connected to the Karstadt department store. There is direct access to the department store on the ground floor and first floor.

use

The center is 16,000 m² in size and includes 60 specialist shops , including two textile stores , a supermarket, and catering and service industries . A total of 400 employees work in the company, around 45,000 visitors come every day. The city's tourist information center is on the ground floor at Luisenplatz. Darmstadt Marketing has also been located on the 3rd floor since 2012. The congress hall was converted into a retail space (fashion) in 2012 after 10 years of vacancy; this was closed at the beginning of 2020. At the end of 2019 it was announced that the city's citizens and public order office would move into rooms on the upper floors of the Luisencenter at the end of 2020. The previous location, the town house on Grafenstrasse, offers too little space for the growing offices and needs renovation, so it was decided to move to new rooms.
