The Wilhelminenstrasse tunnel , also known as the Citytunnel , is a tunnel in Darmstadt that passes under the B 26 under Luisenplatz and Wilhelminenstrasse as a one-way street to the south. This makes it a supra-local link between Griesheim and Dieburg and represents an important north-south connection.
history
The tunnel was built as part of a one-way ring around the city of Darmstadt and to develop the underground car park under the Luisencenter and the Karstadt department store . Work on the building began in February 1975 together with that on the Luisencenter. The single-tube tunnel was completed and officially opened in autumn 1977.
The length of the tunnel is 540 m, that of the public access and exit ramps 350 m and that of the garage access and exit ramps 235 m. The clear height of the carriageway is 4.50 m and the total width in the normal area with three lanes is 9.75 m. In the area of the underground loading yard, the maximum clear tunnel width is 18 m. The greatest excavation depth was 13 m in the area of Luisenplatz.
Entrances and exits
The tunnel has two entrances (Rheinstrasse from the west and Wilhelminenstrasse / Cityring from the north). It ends in the south on Hügelstrasse with two exits. There it can be exited to the east or west (exit ramps Hügelstrasse west and east ). The city tunnel also has two exits and entrances to the parking garages. A total of nine escape staircases, at a maximum distance of 70 m, are available for evacuation.
particularities
In Darmstadt, the city tunnel is also used for celebrations after football matches have been won, when celebrations take place elsewhere on the central square. Then the police cordon off the two entrances and the fans celebrate in the tunnel with its special acoustics, like after the promotion of the professional football department of SV Darmstadt 98 in May 2014 and May 2015 or after the German national football team won European or World Cup matches .
