Francis Xavier Gartland

Francis Xavier Gartland (born January 19, 1808 in Dublin , Ireland , † September 20, 1854 ) was an Irish-American clergyman and bishop of Savannah .

Life

Francis Xavier Gartland received on August 5, 1832 the Coadjutor Bishop of Philadelphia , Francis Patrick Kenrick , the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Pope Pius IX appointed him on July 23, 1850 first bishop of the newly established diocese of Savannah. The Archbishop of Baltimore , Samuel Eccleston PSS , donated him episcopal ordination on November 10 of that year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Pittsburgh , Michael O'Connor SJ , and the Bishop of Philadelphia, Francis Patrick Kenrick. As a motto he chose Vincit veritas ( Truth wins ).

When he took office, the diocese of Savannah numbered 5,500 Catholics and comprised all of Georgia and large parts of Florida. Gartland began building the new diocese with donations raised in Ireland and other countries. During his tenure, three churches were built and Savannah Cathedral was enlarged and renovated. Gartland rededicated the cathedral in June 1853.

Gartland died of yellow fever .
