John Barry (born July 16, 1799 in Coolamain , Ireland , † November 19, 1859 in Paris , France ) was an Irish - American clergyman and bishop of Savannah .

Life

John Barry received the sacrament of ordination for the Diocese of Charleston on September 24, 1825 .

After the death of the first Bishop of Savannah, Francis Xavier Gartland , he was elected diocesan administrator. Pope Pius IX appointed him Bishop of Savannah on January 9, 1857. The Archbishop of Baltimore , Francis Patrick Kenrick , donated him episcopal ordination on August 2 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Mobile , Michael Portier , and the Bishop of Philadelphia , Johannes Nepomuk Neumann CSsR .

When he took office, the diocese was financially inadequate and staffed by a yellow fever epidemic . Despite his poor health, Barry went to Europe to solicit donations and priests. During this trip he died in Paris.
