Augustin Verot

Augustin Verot PSS (born May 23, 1805 in Le Puy-en-Velay , France , † June 10, 1876 in St. Augustine , Florida , USA ) was Bishop of Saint Augustine .

Life

Augustin Verot, whose exact date of birth is different, entered the Sulpizian order and received the sacrament of priestly ordination on September 20, 1828 .

On December 11, 1857, Pope Pius IX appointed him . the Apostolic Vicar of Florida and titular bishop of Danaba . The Archbishop of Baltimore , Francis Patrick Kenrick , ordained him episcopal on April 25 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Richmond , John McGill , and the Bishop of Savannah , John Barry . The inauguration took place on June 3, 1858.

On July 23, 1861, Verot was also appointed Bishop of Savannah . During the American Civil War he was known for his advocacy for the maintenance of slavery, although he clearly advocated the humanization of slavery and the rights of released slaves. Still, he was referred to as a rebel bishop in the northern states .

With the elevation of the Apostolic Vicariate to the diocese of Saint Augustine on March 11, 1870, Verot became its first bishop. At the same time he was released from the leadership of the diocese of Savannah.

At the First Vatican Council he took part as a council father and stood up for the rights of African American people and ecumenical cooperation.
