John McGill

John McGill (born November 4, 1809 in Philadelphia , USA , † January 14, 1872 in Richmond , Virginia ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Richmond .

Life

John McGill attended Saint Joseph's College . In 1828 he earned a Bachelor of Arts . McGill studied Philosophy and Catholic Theology at St. Thomas' Seminary in Bardstown , Kentucky and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore , Maryland . He received on 13 June 1835 by the Bishop of Bardstown , John Baptist Mary David PSS , the sacrament of Holy Orders .

McGill then served as assistant priest at St. Peter's Church in Lexington and at Assumption Cathedral in Louisville . In 1839 John McGill became pastor of the St. Louis Parish in Louisville.

On July 23, 1850, Pope Pius IX appointed him . to the Bishop of Richmond. The Archbishop of Saint Louis , Peter Richard Kenrick , donated him episcopal ordination on November 10 of that year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Nashville , Richard Pius Miles OP , and the Bishop of Louisville, Martin John Spalding . The inauguration took place on December 6, 1850.

John McGill attended the First Vatican Council .
