Johann Gerhard Ruland (born June 13, 1785 in Speyer ; † November 27, 1854 there ) was a German painter, draftsman and lithographer .

life and work

He was the son of the merchant and painter Johannes Ruland (1744–1830) and his wife Elisabeth Wilhelmine born. Shock. Like his father, Johann Gerhard Ruland only operated graphics and painting as a sideline. The main source of income remained the family business at the cattle market in Speyer. Even his great-grandfather, Johann Seger Ruland (1683–1745), lived as a trader in Speyer and developed a new grape variety that is named Ruländer after him .

Together with his brother Karl Friedrich (1784–1851), Johann Gerhard Ruland probably learned the art of painting from their father. He made many lithographs of Speyer and the surrounding area, but also various paintings and drawings. In addition, both brothers are documented as decorative painters in the service of their hometown, for example at the festivities for King Ludwig I of Bavaria's visit to the Palatinate in 1829.

Johann Gerhard Ruland was married to Susanna Elisabeth geb. Hock († 1847) from Annweiler , with whom he had several children. The son Johannes (born March 14, 1822 in Speyer) also worked as a painter or graphic artist and emigrated to the USA after the death of his father, where he a. a. stayed in Buffalo . There he is listed in 1855 as painter John Ruhland in the trade directory; sometimes his pictures appear in the art trade.
