Johann Gustav Fischer
Johann Gustav Fischer (born March 1, 1819 in Hamburg ; † January 27, 1889 ibid) was a German zoologist ( herpetologist , ichthyologist ).
Fischer studied in Leipzig and received his doctorate in Berlin in 1843 with a dissertation on cranial nerves in reptiles and amphibians. He taught at the Johanneum in Hamburg and later worked as a volunteer at the Natural History Museum in Hamburg , responsible for fish, reptiles and amphibians.
Several reptiles (such as the chameleon Kinyongia fischeri , the gecko Lygodactylus fischeri ) and amphibians (such as the salamander Onychodactylus fischeri and the frog Physolaemus fischeri ) are named in his honor. He first described the snakes Boiga pulverulanta , Enulius flavitorques unicolor and Epicrates striatus , the gecko Pachydactylus laevigatus .
In addition to systematic work, he also dealt with the anatomy of reptiles and amphibians.
Collections from East Africa by Fischer are in the Herpetological Collection of the University of Hamburg. Much of his collection was acquired by the Natural History Museum in London.
Fischer was a member of the Hamburg parliament from 1880 to 1889 . There he was a member of the right-wing group.
