Johann Hartung came from a family of artists in Koblenz and was unmarried. His brother Heinrich Hartung (1816-1893) was like his son Heinrich Hartung III. and his nephew Clemens Heinrich Hartung painter . Initially, the artistically gifted Johann Hartung also pursued painting. The Parisian painter Horace Vernet was his teacher. He later turned to sculpture and took lessons from the Parisian sculptor François Rude . His stay in France strongly influenced his life's work and over time he gained an international reputation as a sculptor.

In Koblenz some works commemorate the son of the city. He contributed a bust of the poet Max von Schenkendorf to the decor of the Koblenz Rhine systems . The garden of Koblenz Castle is characterized by its sandstone sculpture, which depicts the allegory of "Father Rhine and Mother Moselle". On behalf of Archduke Stefan of Austria, he worked artistically on the reconstruction of the Schaumburg .

Hartung made many trips in his life. Nothing is known about his death, presumably he died on a trip to Berlin.
