Johann Heinrich Bongard
Johann Heinrich Bongard (born March 18, 1779 in Erkrath ; † December 20, 1857 in Düsseldorf ) was a successful ophthalmologist who is best known today as the author of the first work on the Neandertal .
Life
Bongard, who was married to Nanny Merrem from a respected family of doctors and lawyers in Duisburg, who later provided well-known judges in Cologne, had a clinic in the then spa town of Erkrath in Bongardskämpchen on what was then Kreuzstrasse (today Bergischer Hof), where he as one of the first surgeons and ophthalmologists to surgically eliminate cataracts . Because of his merits, he was appointed to the Secret Medical Council, a higher level of honor for established medical practitioners.
After his death in 1857 the clinic had to be closed.
Post fame
Today Bongard is known through the first hiking guide through the Neandertal, which he only really made known, in which he also used drawings to draw attention to the geology, flora and fauna of the valley, which was still unspoilt until then.
The city of Erkrath honored its famous son by naming a street in the green center of the city.
