from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Heinrich Ludwig Flögel (born June 10, 1834 in Glückstadt , † January 25, 1918 in Ahrensburg ) was a German lawyer, astronomer, natural scientist and nature photographer. Short forms of the name are: Johann Heinrich Flögel , Johann HL Flögel and Johann Flögel .

Life

Johann Heinrich Flögel was a versatile researcher. From 1861 to 1863 he first studied law, then was the financial accountant of the Schleswig-Holstein government (1865), office manager of the Royal Accounting Commission (1867), parish vogt in Kiel (1871) and at the same time accountant of the grand ducal widow's orphanage and, in 1875, notary and parish vogt in Bad Bramstedt . For his outstanding contributions in the field of science Flögel was already on 19 June 1875 by the Kiel University the honorary doctorate appointed. From 1892 Flögel settled as a private scholar in Ahrensburg , where he continued to undertake various scientific studies and published them in the scientific journals of the time. This mainly included biological studies on insects. His collection of 416 microscopic specimens of 66 native aphid species and the associated 110 anatomical specimens, created using his own method, burned in the Hamburg Zoological Museum in 1943 - as did all his other aphid specimens and the aphid gall specimens stored in the Hamburg herbarium .

Schneestern photograph from December 4th 1879 in the evening. - Magnified 147 times, fell at minus 9 ° Celsius.

According to the latest state of the art, Flögel is the first person who succeeded in taking photographic images of snow crystals . On the edges of the recordings, he noted the recording conditions such as time, temperature and magnification. The first snow crystal picture is dated February 1, 1879. That is around six years earlier than the photo taken by Wilson Bentley on January 15, 1885, which was previously the first photo of a snow crystal.

The first picture with the number 12 was taken on February 1st, 1879. It shows “2 snow tables with flower colorithic rays, magnification 46x. These panels fell out of the blue onto the plate laid out and were so small that they could hardly be seen with the naked eye. The much smaller tablet sitting parasitically on one table also shows the shape of the petals. Belongs to the rarest occurrences! "

estate

Flögel's written estate is kept in the Stormarn district archive in Bad Oldesloe . It was handed over to the Stormarn district archive in 2008 by the Museum for Bergedorf and the Vierlande. His photographs are in the Ahrensburg City Archives .

memory

The Ahrensburg Historical Working Group and the City Archives are planning an exhibition in May 2018 on the occasion of Flögel's 100th anniversary of death. The city of Ahrensburg will name a street in the Beimoor-Süd industrial area after the naturalist.
