Johann Heinrich Weisgerber

Johann Heinrich Weisgerber , also known as Weißgerber , (born March 29, 1798 in Trupbach (now part of Siegen ), † October 12, 1868 in Eisern (now part of Siegen)) was a German revival preacher, known as "Tersteegen des Siegerland".

Life

Johann Heinrich Weisgerber, son of a family with eight children, was a shoemaker from Trupbach near Siegen. From 1825 to 1829 he worked in the Düsseltal rescue facility for orphans , the later Graf Recke Foundation , from Adalbert von der Recke-Volmerstein . After his return to Siegerland, he worked as a so-called “hour keeper” and “soul carer” from 1832. In 1838, as a lay preacher in Eisern near Siegen, he founded a Christian household, a so-called “pilgrim hut” based on the model of Gerhard Tersteegen , which existed until 1854. Its content is based on the text The Necessity of Rebirth or the sure and unmistakable path to happiness according to Joh. 3,34 .

Alongside Tillmann Siebel , he was considered one of the fathers of the revival movement in Siegerland. The ecclesiastical and secular authorities in Westphalia and Nassau accused him of "sectarianism". In order to curb his preaching activity, he was required not to spend more than two hours in one place to preach.
