Johann Hermann Julius Maekel (born December 13, 1826 in Schüttorf ; † July 5, 1910 there ) was a German portrait and landscape painter .

Life

Johann Hermann Julius Maekel, called Julius Maekel, was born on December 13, 1826 as the son of the pharmacist Joseph Maekel and his wife Josepha. Wilken was born the third of four children. The family came from Dinklage near Vechta . Julius Maekel had not learned a civil profession, but worked as a portrait and landscape painter. It is not known whether he ever completed an artistic or academic degree. He is said to have stayed in Amsterdam for some time .

All of his paintings date from the relatively short period between 1847 and 1853, after which Maekel fell ill with a nervous disease at the age of 27. With a few exceptions, his artistic estate is privately owned by his descendants.

Two portraits of his parents in the Biedermeier style from 1849 are particularly noteworthy, and another famous portrait called J. Maekel à Amsterdam is on display in the Emsland Museum in Lingen . However, he also created many pictures of the area around Schüttorf and Bad Bentheim . His greatest work is entitled Escape to Egypt and shows the flight of Mary and Joseph to Egypt in a landscape around Bentheim.
