Johann Jakob Rietmann (born March 16, 1808 in St. Gallen ; † August 23, 1868 there ) was a Swiss landscape painter, draftsman and engraver.

Life

Johann Jakob Rietmann was born as the second child of the miller Johann Jacob Rietmann and Magdalena Glinz. After attending elementary school and high school, he received his first apprenticeship as a painter from Niklaus Senn, who recommended him as a draftsman. In the report on Rietmann's employment as a teacher for drawing and form theory in primary schools, he is described as a "hardworking, quiet and serious character". Rietmann studied from November 11, 1829 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich . After completing his studies, in 1831 he became a teacher of forms at the cloth house in St. Gallen.

As a result of the "new school facilities" introduced in St. Gallen, Rietmann lost his job in 1834 and started working as a private teacher. In April 1836 he found a temporary job again. In the spring of 1842 he became a permanent teacher for writing and drawing at the girls' school. He married Barbara Louise Zollikofer. The couple had a daughter and two sons.

From 1830 to 1868 Johann Jakob Rietmann made over 200 views of the city of St. Gallen and a large number from Eastern Switzerland. His drawings and engravings are valuable documents from his era.
